A new study in the UK investigating the effect of DoxyPEP on the gut microbiome and is now recruiting participants.
The University of Oxford, Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust and The Love Tank CIC have launched the SPEAR (STI Prophylaxis and Emergence of Antimicrobial Resistance) study.
Participants will receive a £30 voucher for each of the three appointments – totalling £90, as well as travel expenses to/from London.
SPEAR will investigate the impact of using an antibiotic called doxycycline to prevent sexually transmitted infections (STIs), known as STI prophylaxis or ‘DoxyPEP’. The study will investigate antibiotic resistance and the impact on normal bacteria (the microbiome) in the gut and throat of gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men.
The findings will better enable people using, or thinking about using DoxyPEP, to consider the possible risks and benefits of using DoxyPEP – as well as help the NHS develop the tools to monitor antibiotic resistance.
Who is eligible to apply:
Gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men, over the age of 18, who fit one of the following categories:
- Have used DoxyPEP in the last 3 months
- Have been treated for an STI with doxycycline in the last 3 months
- Have not had any antibiotics in the last 3 months
